Exhibition of Ethiopian Portraits

A remarkable exhibition of photographic portraits of tribal people from Southern Ethiopia opens at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London on Thursday 4th June. The exhibition is the work of artist Nicola Reed who has been photographing people in Ethiopia since the late 1980s.
Nicola explains that “my work is about celebrating each individual and their unique style and personality which is such a notable feature of the peoples of the Omo valley, Ethiopia.”
She goes on to stress how fragile their pastoralist lifestyle is due to global change and development. “This is a moment, this is a world that may soon disappear. It was very important to me to photograph these special people going about their every day life in their communities and at local markets,” says Nicola.
She has captured their sartorial style in a particular painterly fashion. The effect is stunning.
All proceeds will go to the charity Ethiopiaid and the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, Addis Ababa (Nicola’s hero, Nobel peace prize nominee Dr Catherine Hamlin, founder of the hospital has chosen her favourite portrait).
About the artist: Nicola Reed is a prize winning graduate of Chelsea and St Martin’s Schools Ethiopia.
All photographs are editions of 10 Giclee on Hahnemuhle paper, size variable.
